LAS VEGAS – Odds makers at multiple Nevada sports book casinos have assigned both the Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks equal 5000 to 1 odds of winning the AFC title for the 2014 season, despite the fact that the Raiders are the only one of the two franchises that technically play in the American Football Conference, according to casino sources.
“Well, they’re both long shots to win the AFC, sure,” said well-known sports gambling analyst Danny Sheridan. “But technically, it’s not impossible. Sometime between now and the end of the season, The NFL could suddenly decide to do some sort of crazy midseason realignment that would rotate dozens of teams to different divisions, resulting in the Seahawks ending up, like, in the AFC West or something. In which case, yes, the Seahawks could technically win the AFC this year.”
Asked if such a scenario didn’t seem extraordinarily unlikely, Sheridan replied, “Well, no more so than the Raiders winning the AFC. I mean, have you seen their roster? Matt Schaub? Seriously?”
The unlikely odds combination has inspired other casinos to offer similar wagering propositions.
“I just placed a three-way bet on a ‘You Never Know’ ticket at the MGM Grand,” said local gambler Ricky Kesler. “Now all I need is for the sun to rise in the west, pigs to start flying, or Jay Cutler to be named 2014 league MVP, and I win ten thousand bucks.”
